The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. And this is the name by which he will be called: “The Lord is our righteousness.”
Therefore, the days are surely coming, says the Lord, when it shall no longer be said, “As the Lord lives who brought the people of Israel up out of the land of Egypt,” but “As the Lord lives who brought out and led the offspring of the house of Israel out of the land of the north and out of all the lands where he had driven them.” Then they shall live in their own land.

Since graduating from high school, I don’t think I’ve slept in the same bed for more than two years at any given time, even if it was simply moving to another dorm room. At times, I have felt like a restless wanderer, wondering when I’ll settle down, what I will call “my own land.”
And yet, I have also felt at home in so many places. Each place brought with it a sense of belonging – that the Lord had brought me to a place I could call home. In my discernment toward joining the Jesuits, I finally realized that my spiritual home was in religious community. As Jerome Nadal, one of the first Jesuits, said, “The world is our home.”
What characterizes home? A brief glimpse of the kingdom! Communities seeking wisdom and justice. Working for justice and mercy, providing safety to those on the margins. People who let go of grievances in order to genuinely care for the good of others. A place where people have allowed Jesus to make a home in their hearts.
Jesus, even though it seems to me a poor home, settle in my heart. Tidy it with me, so that my heart may better welcome others. As I prepare to celebrate your birth, help me to remember that my true home is wherever your Spirit of wisdom, justice, and merciful love are found. Amen.
